Abstract

Th e article is an interdisciplinary juxtaposition of two problems
present in the everyday school practice of a Polish language teacher. It includes
considerations on teaching one of the basic forms of expression – a narrative
essay (text-creation education in language education) and the problem of
educating students with ASD diagnosis (individualisation and adaptation
102
of forms and methods of education). Th e presented material is a supplement
to the monograph Narrative texts of students with ASD (narrative essay and
page from a diary) (Balcerek, 2023).
Th e starting point is the defi nition and classifi cation of ASD described in the
Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fift h Edition. DSM-5
and in the International Classifi cation of Diseases ICD-11. Th e analysis of
the research material included behavioral theories to improve the functioning
of children with ASD in social environments, such as kindergartens and
schools.
Th e main part of the article is a case study in the fi eld of text-creating competence
of a student with ASD over three years of primary school (from grades
4 to 6). Th e presentation and analysis of the research are made through the
prism of the diagnosis and the content of the student’s medical report, supported
by conclusions from my own pedagogical observation taking place as
part of Polish language lessons.
