Jan Hus as Teacher (I.): His Requirements towards Teachers during his Rectorship. – In connection with this year’s 600th anniversary of the death of Jan Hus, Zuzana Svobodová addresses his role as Rector of Charles University. Specifically, based on Jan Hus’s university addresses, the roles of teacher and pupil are investigated, focusing on the virtues, which academics were called to be aiming at. Hus saw the fundamental functioning of the university in the effort for an ever greater glory of God’s truth. In Hus’s opinion, this should be assisted by cultivating knowledge as well as by addressing man’s will. Along the same lines, university members need to strive for courage, perseverance, humility, and modesty, however, above all, it is love that has to show in the life of a scholar. Without love, all efforts shall prove futile. Whoever wishes to promote themselves rather than improving relations to other people, he/she works towards deteriorating the good name of the university. A scholar’s role is primarily one of service; it primarily involves self-education and continuing education.
