Focus and Scope
Scientia in educatione (sciED) is an international biannual peer-reviewed and open-access journal that publishes original research studies. Its main objectives are:
- To provide a platform for high-quality educational research in STEM subjects, that is, science (biology, environmental studies, geology, physics, and chemistry), technology, engineering and mathematics.
- To promote both theoretical and empirical research in STEM education, ranging from early childhood to university education.
- To bridge the gap between research and practice by publishing texts which serve not only to deepen knowledge and provide information about the current state of research, but also as valuable inspirational sources for further research and educational practice.
The journal scope covers (but is not limited to) reports of STEM-focused research on pupils’ and students’ learning, teaching goals and policy, the use of educational technology, and pre- and in-service teacher education.
The journal especially encourages the publication of studies which are of interest to international research communities. Although papers can be published in Czech or Slovak, the journal encourages authors to write in English so that their work is more widely available. The educational research in south- and middle-European countries draws on shared experience in culture and education and therefore sciED seems a good venue for publishing research conducted in these countries. Nevertheless, the sciED editors do not want to limit the scope of the articles and welcome any contributions in which the authors explain their local contexts and demonstrate the significance of their work for a global educational community.
The journal is aimed at international researchers in STEM education and pedagogy, doctoral and master students, and the expert public. The journal publishes the following types of articles: original research articles, original theoretical studies, surveys and discussion papers. A special issue on a specific topic of interest to the international audience can be suggested by the members of the international editorial board.
The editorial board consists of distinguished researchers in their fields and guarantees a high level of accepted contributions. The papers undergo a review process and are judged by two researchers from the appropriate field.
The authors of papers are responsible for their content and originality.
There are no author fees or charges required for manuscript processing and/or being published in the journal. All content is freely available without charge to users and their institutions. Users are allowed to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full texts of the articles, or use them for any other lawful purpose, without asking prior permission from the publisher or the author. This is in accordance with the BOAI definition of open access.
The journal is archived by the National Library of the Czech Republic (https://www.webarchiv.cz/cs/hledat/scientia%20in%20).
The journal Scientia in educatione respects the international Code of Conduct and Best Practice Guidelines for Journal Editors of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).
The journal Scientia in educatione does not tolerate plagiarism or other unethical behavior.
Peer Review Process
Submitted papers undergo a rigorous single-blinded peer review process. Each contribution will be reviewed by two independent researchers in the given field.
Reviewers' anonymity is preserved by the journal. If the author does not wish the reviewer to know his/her name (to ensure double-blinded peer review), he/she must upload the manuscript in two variants – once with all of the necessary items of information included and once without names and other information which might lead to his/her identification.
The Editorial Board has the right to refuse the article if it thinks that it does not comply with the basic requirements of a research text, if it is too long or markedly outside the scope of the journal. Prior to sending the article to reviewers, the Editorial Board can also recommend language, format and content changes to authors.
After the article has been reviewed, the authors will receive the comments and suggestions of the reviewers via the online system. The editorial board decides on the acceptance of papers and informs the author about it.
More information on the review process can be found in Author Guidelines section.
Publication Frequency
The journal is published twice a year,. A special monothematic issue was published in 2017 and 2019.
Articles accepted for publication can be published in an advance online manner before being included in the next issue.
Open Access Policy
sciED is an open access journal which means that all content is freely available without charge to the user and his/her institution. Users are allowed to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full texts of the articles, or use them for any other lawful purpose, without requesting prior permission from the publisher or the author. This is in accordance with the BOAI definition of open access.
