Abstract

Using the method of conceptual analysis, the study highlights the topic of spiritual literacy (as the development of a specific spiritual personal quality of an individual) in public secular education. The spiritual dimension is part of the human way of being and should not be confused with a religious relationship to the sacred. It emerges in four types of relationships, the first being the relationship to the self, with an emphasis on the capacity for self-reflection and questioning the meaning of life. The second is relating to people with a friendly and loving attitude. The third establishes a relationship with nature in a mode of kinship and sensitivity. And the fourth is transcendence experienced in wonder and amazement at the transcendence experienced in transformative experiences. The paper concludes by highlighting selected ways in which spiritual literacy can be cultivated in public education with respect to the age dispositions of children and young people.
